Knob and tube and aluminum wiring replacement
Knob and tube adds about $2,000 on top of the rest of the job for overhead and material, plus about $50 to $75 for each device that has to be refed. Houses differ a lot, so the real number comes after an assessment, not from a flat price online.
What to expect
-
Assessment first
We need to see how much knob and tube is still in use, what the insurer is asking for, and whether the walls are plaster or drywall.
-
Insurance letters
When the insurer wants proof the old wiring is gone, we document the work we did. Tell us if there is a deadline.
-
Patch and paint with the rewire
Opening walls leaves holes. We can include patch and paint so the electrical work and the finish are one job.
-
Aluminum wiring
We replace aluminum wiring as well. There is no single public price for it. The quote follows what has to be refed.
Questions
Questions about Knob and tube replacement
Can you give a price from the phone?
Only a range. Knob and tube adds about $2,000 plus about $50 to $75 a device on top of the other work. The assessment is what turns that into a number for your house.
Plaster or drywall?
Both. Plaster takes longer to open and to make good. Say which one you have, or that you are not sure.
Do you write to the insurer?
We can document the replacement for your insurer when that is part of the scope. Put the deadline on the form if you have one.
